Question: Is it forbidden to dye hair, put on make-up and nail polish; if yes, why? There has to be a logical explanation. Why would it be forbidden anyway? It makes you look more beautiful. What’s wrong with that? I’m not talking about a heavy make-up, but rather something simple, the kind of one that will make you look beautiful.
It is not forbidden to put on make-up or nail polish! Allah created women with a tendency to titivate. However, Allah allowed women to titivate under ‘certain conditions’. A woman can put on make-up or dye her hair but she cannot let everyone see it. She must not look attractive to strangers.
Who is allowed to see the beauties of a woman? The answer is in the 31st verse of the 24th chapter of Quran, chapter An- Noor (the light). Allah the Almighty commands:
“Tell the believing women to reduce some of their looks, and cover their private parts. Tell them not to uncover their beauty except what is naturally seen. Tell them to put their headscarves onto their chests and not expose their beautiful parts except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, those in their possession, those male attendants that have no sexual desire to women, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women…” (An-Noor/The Light 24:31)
Islam is a religion and in this religion, only Allah sets up the rules and believers are obliged to follow them. Allah has designated for a Muslim woman how to titivate, cover her body and even the way she walks on the streets, which is clear in the verse that is stated above.
