Question: Are there any fatwas about candle(holy) nights which Madhhab’s Imams gave through their fatwas? I read something like, these nights started during the time of Ottoman Empire. Is there any reason for Ottomans started these nights?

Answer:

Imām Abū Ḥanīfah (died. 150 h.), Imām Malik ibn Anas (died. 179 h.), Imām Al-Shafi‘i (died. 204 h.) and Imām Ahmad ibn Hanbal (died. 241 h.) and other Madhhab’s Imams gave no fatwa about these issue because when they were alive, there were no celebration of these nights such as Mawlid, Miraj and Baraat Candles.

These candle nights did not start during the time of Ottoman Empire, they started at Egypt three hundred fifty years later after the Hijra. From there, these nights moved State of Shia Fatimi. After that candle nights started to celebrate during time of II. Sultan Selim at the Ottoman Empire.

During those days minarets of mosques were covered with candles and that is why they gave those nights the candle nights name. So these nights are named during the Ottoman Empire as kandil(candle) but they did not start from there.

Questions: There are some claims about poetry from time of pre-Islamic era, are found in the verses of Holy Qur’an. More of that, some people claim that Qur’an was shaped from these kind of poetry. What is the explanation that you can give to these kind of questions?

Answer:

These kind of claims are nothing new. During the time of Messenger of Allah, Muhammad(pbuh) and when Qur’an was revealing to him, many polytheists, unbelievers and sinners are used these kind of sayings in their propaganda which are also mentioned in historical documents and Siyer-i Nabi. Allah the Almighty indicates that Holy Qur’an is not a poetry as through following verses:

We did not teach him(Muhammad) poetry, nor it was necessary for him. It is nothing but a reminder and explanatory Quran. To warn whoever is alive, and to become definite for deniers that the word of Allah is descended. (Surat Yā-Sīn 36/69-70)

The Holy Qur’an is not a poetry and there is no poetry inside of it. Also, It is revealed that Umar ibn al-Khattāb told to people about how he believed in Islam and became Muslim as following sentences explain:

“One night I got out to drink. When I could not find anywhere, I decided to go on Kaaba to tawaf it. When I arrive there, I saw the Messenger of Allah who was performing salah; and I wanted to listen him while he was reciting the Qur’an so I got under sheets of Kaaba and came right in front of him. In my mind I was thinking that “this is poetry like people of Quraysh Tribe was saying”; and at that moment he said this verse:

And it is not the word of a poet; little is it that you believe. (Surat Al-Ĥāqqah 69/41)

And when I was thinking that “he is a clairvoyant and he is making up these words”, he read the following verses:

If he (Muhammad) had fabricated against Us some sayings, We would have seized him by force, then We would have cut off his aorta. And none of you could save him. (Surat Al-Ĥāqqah 69/44-47)

He was answering the every question which was passing through my mind so that my heart softened and my eyes got glassy. That way Qur’an led me to accept Islam; which is settled in my heart all the way. Lastly, he finished reading it and went towards his home. I went behind him as well. At the street of his home he sensed and recognized me. He thought that I was going to oppress him so he called me ‘O Umar What is going on!’ – I said ‘I came to obey the Allah, his Messenger and whatever he brought to us.’ He stroked around my heart and prayed. After that he said “With the Wisdom of Allah” and he went(entered) to his home.”

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Question: Adultery is considered zina. So, what if a single man is having relationship with a woman or an unmarried woman with a man, is this situation called as sinning or is it considered zina?

Answer:

Zināʾ (Arabic: الزنا‎ ) is generally defined by Islamic Law as unlawful sexual relations/intercourse. All type of sexual relations such as adultery, fornication and other types(between the owner and his female slave) are considered zina. Islam strictly prohibits any kind of sexual relationship between the people without having a marriage.

Being single does not give you the permission to have sexual relations with others. Following verses from the Holy Qur’an covers this issue:

They who guard their private parts; only to their wives or those their right hands possess, they will not be reproof. (Surat Al-Mu’minūn 23/5-6)

…do not approach to indecencies, what is apparent of them and what is concealed…(Surat Al-’An`ām 6/151)

…Zina at the sight of Allah, is a grievous sin.

(Surat An-Nūr 24/15 “Zina” word located in the 2nd verse of the Surat and carried on its meaning to the following verse)

And do not approach to unlawful sexual intercourse(adultery, fornication); surely it is an indecency and an evil way. (Surat Al-’Isrā’ 17/32)

Question: Couple of days ago over a TV. program, you said that ancestors of Jesus are prophet Abraham and Isaac(peace be upon them). Although as we know Jesus had no father . Are you indicating that Saint Mary comes from the descendant of Isaac?

Answer: Saint Mary comes from the descendant of Aaron(pbuh), his ancestor is Isaac and father of Isaac is Abraham. As Allah Almighty commands at the following verse:

“O sister of Aaron, your father was not a evil man, nor was your mother an unchaste.” (Surat Maryam 19/28)

In Arabic language, ”sister of somebody else” is just a way of expression to indicate that he/she comes from the descendant of someone. So that ”Sister of Aaron” words clearly show us that Mary comes from the same lineage of Aaron. (This idea also backed up by, at the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir as views from Alī ibn Abī Ṭālha and Ishmael As-Süddî. Locate: Ibn Kathir c: 5, s: 233; tahk: Seyyid Muhammad Seyyid, Vecih Muhammad Ahmad, Mustafa Fathi Abdulhakim, Seyyid Abraham Sadık. 1426/2005, Cairo.)

At the Surat of Mary, after telling the story of Jesus, other prophets are mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. Related verse as it follows:

Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favors from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided to righteousness and chose to admire. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration with weeping. (Surat Maryam 19/58)

Situations which break the ablution of people, are located in the following verse:

Part of the verse, is giving enough information about the things which are considered to break ablution. Privy word indicates everything that get out of our system (such as urinating, breaking wind, etc) It is possible that during sleeping hours elbows soften in the body so that with unknowingly a person can break wind; and that can invalidate his/her ablution.

Drinking alcohol is not considered as a breaker for your ablution; but as a muslim you must stay away from the alcohol. All alcaholic beverages are counted as forbidden(haraam)

Question: Some people are claiming that according to one of Prophet Muhammad’s hadith, after the death of Prophet Muhammad angel Gabriel suppose to come back to earth to remove something? Is there any hadith like this?

Answer:

At the resources of hadith books and rumours, we could not locate in any where of Messenger of Allah’s sayşings that indicate return of Gabriel to earth ten times or more after the death of Prophet Muhammad .

According to Islamic perspective Prophet Muhammad is the last Messenger who was sent to mankind and Gabriel is known as the angel who brought the divine inspiration to him. Thats is why the job of angel Gabriel is completed in a way; unless Allah the Almighty commands for more from him. In addition to that angels come down to earth to complete the given commandments of theirs. So if Allah permits, surely angels can come back to earth. Because Gabriel is an angel and if new duties are given to him thats when he can come down to earth more likely. This situation can be related with the Surat Al-Qadr:

Indeed, We landed the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. From where you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than thousand months. The angels and the Spirit near them descend therein by permission of their Lord for each commandment. Peace! it is till the break of emergence of dawn. (Surat Al-Qadr 97)

Question : I read the article about “The book and The Wisdom” from the writings of Prof.Dr. Abdülaziz Bayındır. When I was looking to Surat ‘Āli `Imrān-verse 48 and at Surat ‘Āli `Imrān-verse 110; some words got my attention such as: “Wisdom”, “Torah”, Injil(Gospel) and “The Book”. What is the meaning of “Al-Kitab” at these verses? I know that the Torah was sent before the times of Jesus Christ; but except that one, were there any other books came to the Messengers of Allah? “Al” is used as an affix and the book (kitab) word is used in its single form, so those things made me more curious, would you give me an explanation ?

Answer:

At the Surat ‘Āli `Imrān,verse 48 and Surat Al-Mā’idah,verse 110 words such as the Torah, Gospel and Al-Kitab are mentioned all-together so that there is a significant difference between using the “al-kitab” word at these verses and at Surat Al-Baqarah, verse 151. At the verse(in Baqarah), ” al-kitab” points out the Holy Qur`an. At the other 2 verses which you mentioned “al-kitab” word does not indicate the Holy Qur`an. As a meaning that fits the most is “the writing”(holy book). At those verses Jesus Christ (pbuh) is mentioned and the word Gospel is found in the following text that is why we gave this kind of a meaning . On the other hand at the some verses of the Holy Qur`an, the things which were unknown to a man, are taught by the books(writings). There are examples as: “Who taught (to write) with the pen, Taught man that which he knew not” Surat Al-`Alaq 96/4-5. Another example is : “(And) taught him eloquence“ at the Surat Ar-Raĥmān 55. There was a clue in Al-Baqarah Surat so it pointed out the Holy Qur`an. If there is no clue in the verse, that means a holy book is mentioned there. Also every Messenger teach the Wisdom from the book which is given to them.

Related verses from the Holy Qur`an are:

He will teach him the writing, true knowledge and the Torah and the Gospel.

( Surat ‘Āli `Imrān 3/48 )

The Day when Allah will say: “O Jesus son of Mary! Remember My favor on you and on your mother, when I strengthened you with the holy Spirit; you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity, and when I taught you the writing, the wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; and when you create a thing out of clay like the form of a bird by My permission, then you breathed into it and it became a bird by My permission, and you healed the born blind and the leprous by My permission; and when you brought forth the dead from the grave by My permission; and when I rescued you from the children of Israel; because when you came to them with clear proofs, those who disbelieved among them said: This is nothing but clear magic.” (Surat Al-Mā’idah 5/110)

We have sent among you a messenger to complete our goodness. He recites you our verses, improves you and teaches you the Book and the wisdom; he teaches you that which you did not know. (Surat Al-Baqarah 2/151)

Question: At 116th verse of Surat Al-Mā’idah, the Qur’an informs that Christians claimed a Godship to Saint Mary. I know that Christians are only seeing Jesus Christ as the God and trying to be servants of him. Who are the people that worshiped to Saint Mary?

Answer: In year 431 A.D.(that is approximately 140 years before the birth of Muhammad-pbuh.) at the Third Ecumenical Council, these teachings were accepted by the Christians.

” Jesus Christ revived his being with the intelligent spirit and gathered them with a body to become a human being. So in a real meaning Saint Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ is the mother of the God.”(1)

It is obvious that the mother of the God, is the God!

According to the Catholics, “her motherhood is not over yet”. With recurring intercession of hers, she continues to ensure the gifts of eternal goodness. They say “Saint Mary works like a lawyer, a helper, and an intercessor at the church.”(2)

Because of these words they turned Saint Mary into a God. But, one day Allah, the Almighty will say these words to them:

“O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say to men, Take me and my mother as two interceder deities besides Allah? Jesus will say: I submit to You! It was not for me to say that to which is not right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. You are the only one who knows entire mysteries. “

“I told them what you commanded me. Be the servant/slave of Allah, my Lord and your Lord; I said. I was the witness of them as long as I was among them. After you caused me to die, they were just under your observation. You are the witness of all things.”

(Surat-Al-Mā’idah,5/116-117)

———————————————————-

Question: Some people are saying that “souls of our dead loved ones and our relatives can see and come near us on friday.” Can you enlighten me about this topic?

Answer:

The human’s compound is made from the soul and the body. Soul, uses the body like its home. When he or she sleeps, it leaves the body and when he or she wakes up , it returns to the body. Dead person’s body is like wreckage of a house; the soul can not return to it until it is recreated. As this verse explains:

Allah takes the souls at the moment of their death, and those that do not die (He takes) during their sleep. He withholds those on whom He has passed the decree of death and releases the others for an appointed term. There are signs in this for a community who give thought. (Surat Az-Zumar 39/42)

Sleeping and dying are the functions of body. Soul does not die or sleep. It is mentioned in Holy Qur’an that the soul will give a speech after it leaves its dead body behind:

Until when death comes to one of them, he says: “Revert me would you, my Lord. That I might do a good thing in the earth which I left behind.” By no means! It is only a statement he is saying. Behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected. (Surat Al-Mu’minūn 23/99-100)

As you can see over these verses, there is no statement about returning of souls to the earth that we live in. That is why they cannot come near you or inside the same dimension. Allah clearly explains that he is holding the dead people’s souls and there is a barrier in between them.

These verses also indicates that reincarnation (migration of souls) cannot get any confirmation from the Holy Qur’an. We will give more details about this topic in our coming fatwas.
