And certainly We created you, then We gave you your shape, and then We said to the angels: “Make obeisance to Adam”. All except Iblis did obeisance; he was not of those who did obeisance. (Araf 7/11)
We had told the angels: “Make obeisance to Adam” All of them except Iblis did obeisance. He said: “Shall I make obeisance to him whom You have created of dust?” (İsra 17/61)
The Answer of Iblis
He said: “What hindered you so that you did not make obeisance when I commanded you?” He answered thus: “You have created me of fire, while You created him of dust. I am better than he.” (Araf 7/12)
Allah said: “O Iblis! What hindered you from being with those who make obeisance?
He said: “I am not such that I could make obeisance to a mortal whom You have created of black mud. (Hicr 15/32-33)
Allah said: “O Iblis! What prevented you from doing obeisance to him whom I have created with My power? Are you proud, or are you of the exalted ones?”
Iblis said: “I am better than he; You have created me of fire, while You created him of dust.
Allah said: “Then get out of there; for sure you are one of those who have been driven away. And surely My curse is on you to the day of judgment/religion.”(Sad 38/75-78)
The Punishment of Iblis
He(Allah) told him (Iblis): “Then get down of there (this state/level), for it is not suitable for you to behave proudly therein. Go forth; surely you are of the abject ones.” (Araf 7/13)
I did not make them witnesses of the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor of the creation of their own souls, nor did I take those who lead (others) astray for helpers.
And on that day Allah will say: “Call on those whom you considered to be My associates. So they shall call on them, but they shall not answer them, and We will cause a separation by a hellish stream between them.
And the guilty ones will see the fire and they will know that they are going to fall into it, and they won’t be able to find a place to turn away from it.” (Kehf 18/51-53)
The Issues Iblis has faith in;
a- The Belief in the Afterlife
He said: “My Lord! Respite me until the day when the mortals are raised up.
Allah said: “Surely you are of the ones in respite. (Araf 7/14-15)
b- The Awareness of the Right Path
Iblis said: “Then, I swear by Your Might that I will surely make all, but Your servants –the purified ones-, live an evil life.
Allah said: “This is the truth and the truth do I speak; I will most certainly fill hell with you and with all those among them who follow you.(Sad 38/82-85)
Allah said: “Get down of there (this state) as you are despised and driven away; I swear that whoever of the mortals will follow you, I will certainly fill the hell with you and them all.”(Araf 7/18)
He had said: “Is this he whom You have honored above me? If You respite me to the day of resurrection, I will most certainly cause his progeny to perish under my command except a few.
Allah said: “Be gone! For whomever of them that follows you, surely hell is the recompense for you all, a full recompense.
Beguile whomsoever your power can with your voice; and collect against them your vociferous forces riding and on foot, and share with them in wealth and children, and hold out promises to them; but the Shaitan promises them only to deceive:
Truthfully, as for My servants, you have no authority over them. Your Lord is sufficient as Protector.” (İsra 17/62-65)
Iblis’ Promise
The Placement of Adam in Heaven
And We said: “O Adam! Your wife and you reside in this garden (heaven) and eat from it a plenteous (food) wherever you wish, only do not approach this tree, for then you will be of the unjust.(Bakara 2/35)
The Expulsion from Heaven
Get down, most of you being the enemy of each other, and settle on earth for a period of time.
He said: “Therein will you live, and therein will you die, and from there will you be raised.” (Araf 7/24-25)
He told them: “Get down from there (this state) all of you, being enemies to each other. Surely there will come to you a guide from Me. Whoever follows My guidance, will not go astray nor will be unhappy.
And whoever turns away from My Book, he will be expected by a straitened life, and We will raise him on the day of resurrection, blind.” (Taha 20/123-124)
The Eating from the Forbidden Tree
The Desire for Mortality or Angel- like- Existence
The Shaitan whispered them and made them manifest to each other what had been hidden from them of their evil inclinations, and he said: “Your Lord has forbidden you this tree to prevent you both, either from becoming angels or from staying here forever (immortals).” (Araf 7/20)
But the Shaitan made an evil suggestion to him by saying: “O Adam! Do you want me to guide you to the tree of immortality and to a kingdom which does never decay?”
Then they both ate from the fruits of that tree and their evil inclination were manifested to them. They both began to cover themselves with leaves of Heaven. Adam disobeyed his Lord and thus lost his way. (Taha 20/120-121)
Adam’s Answer
His Lord chose him once more and accepted his apology; He turned to him and guided to the right path. (Taha 20/122)
Conclusion
And it is said to them: “Where are those that you used to worship besides Allah? Can they help you or are they able to help themselves?
AN EXAMPLE IN RELATION TO THIS ISSUE
In Turkey and in some other Muslim countries the Muslim woman is not allowed to cover. Those who favor this practice usually tend to claim that they are respectful to the religion and its commands and strongly reject to be denounced as enemies of religion.
-Is there any command in relation to the headscarf banners in the Koran?
- Sure, there is. The covering of their heads is a command of Allah, to all Muslim women. The situation of those who do not accept even a single command of Allah has been clearly explained in the Koran. It should be well known and acknowledged by every Muslim. Now, let me ask you a question: which is the creature that symbolizes the ‘going astray’ and leading others astray’?
- Yes the Shaitan or Iblis with his other name. While he was together with the angels and Allah commanded him and all the other angels to obeisance to Adam, he refused to obey this command and for this reason he became a disbeliever.
So, Iblis was driven away for not obeying one single of Allah’s commands.
- Furthermore, there is the pride, the hubris. The Glorified Allah commands: “…He (Iblis) refused, he was proud, and he became one of the unbelievers...” (Bakara 2/34)
- The pride shown by the Shaitan was not toward Adam; actually it was pride (hubris) toward Allah. In other words, Iblis found it difficult to obey Allah’s command to make obeisance to a creature created by the mud. For this reason, (Allah) told him : “Then get down of there (this state/level), for it is not suitable for you to behave proudly therein. Go forth; surely you are of the abject ones.” (Araf 7/13)
- Is this behavior of Iblis denying Allah?
- Iblis doesn’t comply with only one of Allah’s commands; and this has been sufficient to conclude him as a disbeliever. While, Iblis has not denied neither Allah’s existence, nor, His Creating Might, nor even His Power. The Glorified Koran informs that after he went astray, he said: “Surely I am clear of you, surely I see what you do not see, surely I fear Allah; and Allah is severe in punishment.”(Enfal 8/48) As he had continued not to acknowledge some of Allah’s commands, these words have not saved him from becoming from the disbelievers.
- Additionally, this verse demonstrates that he believed in the hereafter and the Day of Judgment.
- Then we are in front of very bizarre situation. Iblis has faith in Allah (his existence), he believes the existence of angels as he was among them, and believes in the Day of Judgment. There is no prophet, he has to acknowledge as Adam has not become a prophet yet and there are no descended scriptures in which he should believe. According to some people, these are features that make one a good Muslim, but the 34th verse of Bakara clearly identifies him as a disbeliever. In addition, if we consider the Koran as an entity, it is clearly noticeable that he is the furthest in disbelieving.
