The Glorified Allah commands: “Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. And there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.” (Al-Baqara 2/ 62)
Those who are reached by any prophets’ manifestation are only responsible from shirk and the veracities they know. Those who are reached by any of the prophet’s manifestations have to obey them and live their life in compliance with these teachings. Being reached by the instructions of a prophet means to get to see the miracle of this prophet, in other words it means to see this prophet’s certification. Then, that person gets to understand the true unarguable knowledge as he had seen the Prophet with his eyes. The certification of Prophet Mohammed (s.a.v.) is the Qur’an. People, who haven’t been reached by the teachings and verses of Qur’an in a language they understand, can’t be considered to have been reached by the Prophet’s instructions.
There are similar verses to the one shown above in the Surah Maeda. Its full version is: “Say: O followers of the Scripture! you have no importance till you observe the Torah and the Injeel and that which was revealed to you from your Lord. (O Muhammad) that which has been revealed to you from your Lord shall make many of them increase in transgress and unbelief. So, grieve not therefore for the unbelieving folk.
Surely those who believe; the Jews, the Sabians and the Christians whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good– they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.
Certainly We made a Covenant with the children of Israel and We sent to them messengers. Whenever a messenger came to them with what that their souls did not desire, they denied some (of them) and slew some of them.” (Al-Maeda/ The Feast 5/68-70)
There is another verse related to this issue: “Those who follow the Messenger- the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written down with them in the Taurat and the Injeel, (who) enjoins them good and forbids them evil. (Who) makes lawful to them the good and makes unlawful to them impure things. (Who) relives them from their heavy burdens and the shackles which were upon them. Those who believe in him and honor him and help him, and follow the Light which has been sent down with him, they will prosper.” (A’raf/ Purgatory 7/157)
In the religion of Hebrews’, Christians’ and Sabians’ the belief in Allah’s existence, His oneness, and the belief in the afterworld are present. The expression ‘good actions’ mentioned in the verse varies according to people’s knowledge. As the previous verses states plainly, those ones who are reached by the instructions and teachings of the last Prophet have to believe and to obey it by accomplishing the good actions defined there. Allah had asked the prophets give their word in relation to this issue:
“Certainly I have given you of the Scripture and wisdom– then a messenger comes to you verifying that which is with you, you have to believe in him, and you have to aid him. He said: Do you affirm? Do you accept My heavy Covenant in this (matter)? They said: We do affirm. He said: Then bear witness, and I (too) will bear witness with you.” (Al-e –Imran/ The House of Imran 3/81)
In conclusion the verse at the beginning of the chapter should be understood this way: “Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians (who are believers of these religions and has been reached from the manifestation of the last Messenger), whoever believes in Allah (without attributing a partner to Him)and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. There is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.” (Al-Baqara 2/ 62
