When Is a Woman’s Menstrual Period Considered to Have Ended?

The menstrual period is not considered over until the blood has completely stopped.

Characteristics of Menstrual Discharge

This blood is typically red on most days, but it can be light pink or brownish at the beginning of the period, and occasionally black towards the end of the cycle. Yellow or green discharge, or constant black bleeding, indicates an illness, and gynaecological examination is advised in such cases.

Post-Menstrual Spotting

The small amount of brownish and thick discharge that appears after the period (spotting) is usually caused by old blood that was not expelled from the body during the cycle. It darkens in colour due to contact with air and waiting. This is a frequently encountered and natural situation. Since it occurs after the bleeding has ceased, it is not counted as menstruation (hayd).

Supporting Evidence from Hadith

This is supported by the narration from Umm Atiyyah, one of the female Companions:

“We never considered yellowish or muddy/brownish discharge after purification as a thing of importance (as menses).”
(Bukhari, Hayd, 26; Abu Dawud, Taharat, 117; Nasai, Hayd, 7)
